The feature shows all elements that have a well-understood meaning by their tagging. So the mapper gets a basic feedback what of his edits have made sense in the commonly accepted semantics. Additionally it is useful to get quick information about what exists in a certain location, in particular at any zoom level. > not covered by the show data function? The data function is essentially a read-only view like an in-place editor. So it is only useful for me if I don't want to log in at that moment. It cares about raw data, without any processing. It is in particular deeply hidden, bceause it works in dense areas only on the highest zoom level, and then only with patience. For example http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/50.73183/7.09999 still takes around 10 seconds to load, and it is difficult to select the right object.
