Dear X-Query list,

Thank you all for the quick responses. I regret not wording my question more
carefully, but what I was asking was why someone decided, once upon a time, not
to support this function in XQuery. That developers have added the
functionality to their products, and that it will be a core part of XQuery 3.0,
is useful information, but it doesn't explain why it was omitted in the first
place. I'm not complaining about the decision, either; I'm just asking whether
anyone on this list was privy to the reasoning behind it.

Thanks,

David

MarkLogic supports format-number() and other formatting functions (date, time,
dateTime) from MarkLogic server 4.2.1 onwards.

XQuery 3.0 will support it (see
http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-functions-30/#func-format-number).
Also, some XQuery processor implement it already (e.g., Zorba, BaseX, and eXist)
