I should stress that my answer was not a statement of historical fact based on archival research, it was a post-hoc rationalization. A serious historical answer to such questions is rarely easy to provide; in most cases, a trawl through the minutes might reveal that the matter was never formally discussed, and so the question becomes, why did no one propose it? To answer that, you have to ask all the individuals who failed to propose it; or you have to read into the mindset of the committee and think about why the committee would not have welcomed a proposal.

Dear X-Query list,

Thank you all for the quick responses. I regret not wording my question more carefully, but what I was asking was why someone decided, once upon a time, not to support this function in XQuery. That developers have added the functionality to their products, and that it will be a core part of XQuery 3.0, is useful information, but it doesn't explain why it was omitted in the first place. I'm not complaining about the decision, either; I'm just asking whether anyone on this list was privy to the reasoning behind it.

Thanks,

David

MarkLogic supports format-number() and other formatting functions (date, time, dateTime) from MarkLogic server 4.2.1 onwards.

XQuery 3.0 will support it (see http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-functions-30/#func-format-number). Also, some XQuery processor implement it already (e.g., Zorba, BaseX, and eXist)
