well I took the e72 back to nokia today. They were stumped at the bug and found it would only connect to web sites when using wireless networks if the wlan wizard was running. they tried to tell me it worked normally but with talks running I could hear what they were doing. When they handed the phone back I closed the wizard and straight away when they saw me heading for the browser said "no it won't work like that. Then they got 3 new handsets out expecting to find they all worked in this way but failing to replicate the problem on any of the other handsets decided to replace it. One tech tried to tell me it works fine off line I explained you are only loading pages stored in memory off line and then told him to log in to my nokia ovi account if he truly believed you could use the internet while offline. They tried to tell me 3 times it worked fine but as soon as I closed the wlan wizard they would remove the phone from my hands. Took about 90 minutes but we got their in the end. They had 3 proper techs totally stumped by this problem. The team leader had by this time gone home for the day and she is the one who has to sign off on the new e72-2 They reckon my old one will go to the states for further study as this problem has never been found before. so in short if the wlan wizard was open you could brows if not the phone can see the internet and can connect to it but not to any site and all built in and third party apps will not work. When using the carrier's access point the phone works perfectly. They asked me if I had used the nokia updater thinking it may have caused the problem. Anyway My sighted friend has to return to Parramatta tomorrow and collect my new e72 They then told me of their other service centre at Hurstville which is much closer. they were amazed about talks and how useable it makes their phones and asked me about it's installation, who produces it and the cost even how it is licensed. After going through that with them I explained that talks is used by tens of thousands of people all over the world on many different handsets and would not be the cause of this problem. Their logic was headed in the direction of well we've never seen this problem before and we have not seen talks before and that line of thinking had to be firmly squashed. Then they double checked I did not restore a backup after they reinstalled the software on Friday and Monday I assured them I knew better than that. You don't restore a backup if you suspect it could be carrying a fault.
