The Light Notepad application recommended to me on this list is the best application I have come across for reading text files so far, with all of its features accessible through Talks as far as I can see. Actually it may have been you who recommended it! If I re-open a book talks starts reading from where I left off and the program has an excellent easy bookmark feature.
The only downside is that I cannot find anyway for Light Notepad to become the default text editor . That is, the application which by default opens text files from email attachments or file manager. I would appreciate advice on this. Or rather books in text format? I haven't been able to figure out how to have it identify them if it does. In the manual it seems to indicate it'll read text books, but it may just be referring to daisy books showing text and no audio rather than reading books in text format.
