You have to go on the internet, on a PC or other phone, and get an activation 
code from the KNFB Reader website.

No you do not need to have a active Sim card in your phone to install a new
version of Talks or the KNFBReader Mobile Software. The only thing it is
required is to have the current date and time correct on the phone when
installing any software updates.
