It's probably in offline mode if it was turned on with no sym card in the
phone. It will stay in offline mode until you answer the question that is
asked every time the phone is switched on.
"Do you wish to continue using the phone in offline mode?"
So make sure a sym card is present, turn on the phone wait for about 15
seconds and just press softkey2 .
It will then load either the last profile used when a sym card is present
if it's a different sym card it should load the general profile.
If talks is installed and has not been disabled this question should be
spoken. So perhaps talks is disabled if it is not speaking.

I am writing on behalf of my friend. He has just got a new
second hand nokia n72 with talks. When he turns it on, it
works ok for about 15 seconds then it all goes quiet, no
talks, no phone ringing sound, no vibration when the phone
rings, any suggestions please? The keyboard is silent and he
has just got a new battery, I think personally it is one of
the profiles but I really don't know.
