Tango Intensive with Nito & Elba Garcia
November 15-19, 2000 in Santa Barbara CA
Benefit BBQ November 18 to help with medical expenses
for Nito & Elba's granddaughter
****************************************
By now, Nito & Elba are familiar to most of you. Nito learned Tango the
old-fashioned way, watching his uncle and aunt dance on a packed-earth
patio in the province of Buenos Aires more than half a century ago. As a
young man he polished his skills in the milongas of Buenos Aires in the
'50s, danced as _bailarin principal_ with the orchestra of Osvaldo
Pugliese, and later moved to Mar Del Plata, on the Atlantic coast of
Argentina, where he continued to perform and teach. A supremely creative
and elegant exponent of the Salon style, Nito & Elba have, in recent years,
been "rediscovered" by the younger tangueros in Buenos Aires, many of whom
seeek them out for individual instruction. Nito & Elba teach regularly at
Club Gricel in Bs. As. and tour North America and Europe frequently for
workshops and seminars. They were featured instructors at Stanford Tango
Weeks, Nora's Tango Weeks, and CITA '99 & 200, among others.
Here in Santa Barbara, we've had the privilege of knowing and studying with
Nito & Elba since 1992, and we try to host them for a workshop each time
they travel to the west coast. This year, they wanted to do a little bit
more. After some discussion, we decided to schedule a "Tango Intensive."
Beginning Wednesday, November 15 we will have five (5) consecutive days of
classes focusing on the Salon style. The plan is to cover, in a progressive
fashion, everything from basic posture & walking exercises, to complicated
giros & enrosques, to adornments. There will be a total of seven (7)
classes, each two-hours long, with some additional time scheduled for
supervised practice and social dancing. Nito & Elba will also be avilable
for privates, of course.
Join us after class Saturday November 18 for dancing and a Santa
Barbara-style BBQ!
In an after-dinner "chamuyo," Nito & Elba will talk about Tango history,
culture, & folklore, and answer all your questions!
No charge for the Santa Barbara hospitality, but please make a donation to
help with medical expenses for Nito & Elba's granddaughter.
Food & refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring something you
like, and throw it on the grill!
