"Shtil, Mayn Corazon: A Yiddish Tango Cabaret" plays in Portland, OR, December 13-17, 2000.
Experience the tango with a surprising new twist. Jenny Levison's new show combines music, theatre and dance to tell an evocative story of Jewish life and immigration in Eastern Europe, Argentina, and the U.S. "Shtil, Mayn Corazon: A Yiddish Tango Cabaret" is conceived, written, and performed by Jenny Levison, and features a live orchestra of internationally known Yiddish and tango musicians (Pablo Aslan, contabass; Steven Greenman, violin; Jeanette Lewicki, accordion; Maurizio Najt, piano; Jenny Scheinman, violin). The show will be performed cabaret-style -- with intimate seating and ample room on the dance floor for tango aficionados. Jenny Levison is an award-winning performer who has been active for many years in the international Yiddish music scene. Levison's 1993 discovery of the little-known repertoire of Yiddish tango led to extensive research in New York, Philadelphia and Buenos Aires, where she unearthed many of the long unheard tangos included in the show. A preview performance will be held at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center (6651 SW Capitol Highway), December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the preview are $15 ( $12 for MJCC members) and are available at the MJCC box office or through FASTIXX (see below.) Premiere and additional performances will be held at the North Star Ballroom (635 N. Killingsworth Court). Shows from December 14, 15, and 16 will be at 7:30 PM, and performances on Sunday, December 17 will be at 2 PM and 7 PM. Tickets to these shows are $15 and are available through FASTIXX (see below.) Tickets to all shows are available at all Fred Meyer FASTIXX outlets and can be charged by phone (503-224-TIXX or 1-800-992-TIXX) or on the web at www.fastixx.com.
