Toronto TANGOFEST 2005 (May 20-22) Dear friends and patrons of Tangofest,
Thanks to your overwhelming support, the organization for the 1st Annual Toronto Tangofest (www.tangofest.ca) is now complete. It will open on Friday, May 20 and continue until May 22. There will be 24 spectacular performances, 2 concerts, 3 dance evenings and nine workshops for all of us. Globe & Mail, Omni Television, Metro News, TeleLatino TV, El Correo, TorontoHispano.com, Eco Latino and several other media organizations will provide coverage of the Tangofest. You are cordially invited to attend this landmark event and bring your family and friends to the concerts, shows and dance evenings. For your convenience we made a whole range of packages available for purchase online on our website (www.tangofest.ca) A summary of the TANGOFEST events follows. You can read the time and venue details on our website (www.tangofest.ca) and also download and print the festival schedule. Day 1 (Friday, May 20) Venue: The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West - At Dovercourt) The festival will open with a workshop by Fabian and Roxana. Next to come is a theatrical presentation TANGUECERO by the Sur Theatre group. The play will be followed by an alternative milonga by DJ Andy Kamienski. There will be a Tango Show with eight performances on the first night including two ballet performances to tango music. The dance evening will continue after the performances, and will be presented by DJ Victor Hugo. Day 2 (Saturday, May 21) Venue for Workshops: Mad for Tango Studio (263 Adelaide Street West) Venue for Concert: Trinity-St. Paul's Centre (427 Bloor Street West) Venue for Tango Show & Dance Evening: The 519 Community Centre (519 Church Street) The second day of the festival will begin with workshops at the Mad for Tango studio. At 6:30 pm we will have a concert at the Trinity-St. Paul's Centre presented by the Argentinian- Canadian band "Sweatshop Tango Ensemble" . The music played by this band ranges from Astor Piazzolla to the classics loved by tango dancers. After the concert, the activities will shift to the next venue at 519 Church Street. Carolyn Dallman Downes will screen her documentary "Por Amor de Tango" followed by an alternative milonga by DJ Andy Kamienski. There will be another eight tango performances, and later the dance evening which will be presented by DJ Victor Hugo. Day 3 (Sunday, May 22) Venue for Workshops: Mad for Tango Studio (263 Adelaide Street West) Venue for Concert: Trinity-St. Paul's Centre (427 Bloor Street West) Venue for Tango Show & Dance Evening: The 519 Community Centre (519 Church Street) The third and final day of the festival will see workshops during the day at the Mad for Tango studio. The 6:30 pm concert at the next venue will showcase Fernando Otero, a world renowned tango pianist who has enthralled audience at the Lincoln Centre, Carnegie Hall and the Glenn Gould studio. After Fernando's early evening concert, the audience will move to the next venue at 519 Church street where they will see one of TANGOFEST's unique presentations. "Tango On Wheels" - by Lisandro Gomez and Spirit Synott, who remains in her wheelchair. Their two performance will be followed by an alternative milonga by DJ Andy Kamienski. There will be another Tango Show with six tango performances, and later the dance evening which will be presented by DJ Victor Hugo.
