Paulo Araujo, a native of Rio de Janeiro, has become the most in demand visiting instructor in Chicago as well as in the San Francisco Bay area. Paulo began his formal study of tango in 1989 in Buenos Aires with Gustavo Naveira, Graciela Gonzalez (one of his favorite partners with whom he teaches in B.A. & Europe), Pepito Avellaneda, Lampazo, Rodolfo and Maria Ciere. Paulo now travels much of the year, throughout the Middle East and Europe as well as semi-annual tours to Chicago & California plus other U.S. cities. For two years now, Paulo has been asked to return to the popular Portland TangoFest in October. He has become one of the favorite instructors for Exotic Tango Vacations, for whom he taught in Mexico with Cecilia Gonzalez in January 2005. (Phoebe interjects post-Mexico Paulo is a much more relaxed yet intense instructor come experience the difference!) Paulo also has choreographed for many dance troupes, including the San Francisco Ballet and DanzaViva, based in Oak Park. The winner of numerous national awards, including Best Tango Teacher in Brazil, Paulos students call him a brujo because of his wizardry in finding and correcting their individual weaknesses. He concentrates on technique rather than steps and gives ingenious exercises to address problem areas.
