I must say that on this count, Chris was correct, although he could not
have known for the reasons you stated. I started speaking in Mexico.
Even in Florida, all my friends (including my spanish-speaking friends)
spoke English, so I did not speak much with them. But my study of tango
(mostly through the music) motivated me tremendously. My girlfriend
speaks spanish and I also practice with her. Of course that happened a
over 2 years after my trip.
