I've been working with a couple of the dojo developers on pure dojo client
side driven apps with minimal server layers, as well as consuming any and
all information I can in regard to this area. I think that in most instances
JSON responses are more efficient, depending on the type/amount of data
being returned. If we want tapestry to be viewed as a killer ajax-supporting
framework JSON is a must have. There are lots of nice articles being written
about it. I highly reccomend at a minimum reading up on
http://codinginparadise.org/weblog/ and http://alex.dojotoolkit.org .

Yeah, you have to have some way of determining the request type. It can
really be any style you want, prototype adds request headers, dojo adds
nothing, I 've used both methods..The response contributor infrastructure is
capable of using any combination of the two to determine the request type
and response to return. I did originally create an AjaxDirectService for
tacos, but only because I didn't have access to Tapestry.

I think building this into the ResponseRenderer instead of each individual
service provides a much cleaner implementation, in that all of the tapestry
services work with it by default, as well as potentially any services other
people have written. It's possible that the actual ResponseRenderer
interface will need to go eventually though, as it is kind of redundant at
this point.

Not stupid questions at all, I'm glad someone is asking them :)

To be really honest I may very well throw everything away that I've done so
far if I don't like the way it "feels" once I really start fleshing out the
component writing aspect of things. The next couple of weeks will probably
see a lot of changes as I attempt to perfect and hone the whole render cycle
using PropertySelection as my guinea pig.
