Yep, my app is using Hibernate/Hsql DB as an embedded EOF/Oracle replacement
:)

Hsql DB rocks. It's mature and fast. Hibernate is younger but so far it
performs as advertised. It's much simpler than EOF, there is no notion of a
full bore EditingContext-- it's closer to TopLinks notion of a "UnitOfWork",
but even simpler than that. The query language is much less OO than
EOQualifiers/Expression etc, but it's also much more expressive. There are
some potential issues with the Hibernate inheritance model-- it only
supports vertical (single table) inheritance, not horizontal. But the nice
thing about Hibernate is that it is *truly* transparent persistence (unlike
EOF). Your EOs know absolutely nothing about the persistence layer. So I
want to see how far I can get with it. I looked at Castor jdo but decided I
didn't like the project. The project seems to be emphasizing XML binding
recently and all of the Castor developers work for a single company (not a
good sign). I'm certainly willing to take a look at Cayenne.

Mind you, I'm only doing very simple things so far with Hibernate. A very
small model (2 EOs) and simple manipulations
