Applet control/communication.

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to hook into a simple applet 
from Tapestry and then have some control over it. Or if the opposite is 
possible, i.e. provide a hook in a page for the applet to communicate 
with the server to retrieve information.

Any suggestions, comments, pointers will be much appreciated.
