Well cool! I hope other builders will chime in, too.

I've busy making 5-string resonator mandolins lately. Over the years
I've made some ukuleles, modified my guitars, made some unusual some
electric instruments... whatever struck my fancy.

I dropped my main mando last spring, and split the top right through
the treble-side F-hole. While I was getting around to repairing it (I
wasn't sure I could do it, at first!) I started looking into making a
5-string resonator mando for myself. I bought an old Dobro mandolin
which had a completely trashed neck and cone, built a 5-string neck
for it, repaired the body, and replaced the cone. I love this thing
and play it more than my regular mandolin now (which I have since
repaired). It's gotten a good amount of interest from folks who have
tried it. Like me, they've been surprised how mellow and useful the
sound is. And how the low C string adds a whole new dimension to their
mando playing.

So I've started in on a second one, and I call it my prototype, since
I didn't build the body of the first one, just the neck. If you are
curious you can see both of them here:

Once I get the bugs out of this design, I'll be building between two
and six more right away for folks who've indicated they want some too!
I am so psyched about this!
