To me, you have to go back to the original tune to truly learn it.  Learning
an already ornamented tune as the original leads to some pretty outlandish
further decoration that usually starts a much larger departure from the true
original.  As to Sally Goodin', it does get better than Eck.  Benny
Thomassonn cleaned it up and Terry Morris (to my ears) perfected it.  Since
then, I think we've seen a de-evolution of the tune.  There are some pretty
good licks that get shoved in there, but nothing that really adds to the
tune.

To the original post, I think it is always best to go back to the oldest,
cleanest version you can learn.  Personalize it from there.
