Playing with two ear monitors is like trying to stand inside a 55 gallon drum and blend. Hartford used to play with no monitors. For the entire time I worked with him, he NEVER used monitors. He'd even make the sound men remove the monitors from the stage or he wouldn't play. He said it was important for people to see the band from their shoes up.
