Clyde, Frank was an originator just like Monroe, McReynolds, Bush, Statman, Grisman, Thile, etc. While he may not have all the chops he used to, he's still one of the most astounding and creative musicians I've ever heard. David Long and I played in his home town a few years ago and Frank came out to visit and play a few. What I heard from him that day was pretty incredible. He played 4-note chord solos as clean and precise as you ever heard, played harmonies, you name it. He was on. Not many have explored the mandolin fingerboard as much as Frank, in my opinion. I know that some of his ideas are way out there, but I can't really think of anybody that's made a mark that hasn't had that said about them.
I reckon for some people Frank is like learning to drink beer. But I also think that it depends on what mood Frank's in too. He can play 'old school' with the best of 'em and then go reeling off sideways to Mars if the urge strikes. Seems like there's a bit of something for everybody there. But that's just me.
