Well I agree, tenor guitars require a different technique than mandolins, but there's a great advantage in the fact that the fretboard roadmap is the same for the two instruments. If I know a tune on the mandolin, I can play it on the tenor almost immediately (as soon my brain has switched to TG-mood)... which wouldn't be true for a regular guitar.
