One way to help get a handle on reading standard would be to get a
standard notation only books with melodies you know in your head and
then use these books to learn them on the mandolin. Examples of good
tunes books would be Christmas/Holiday, Beatles tunes, children's
nursery tunes etc.

Steve Kaufman four hour bluegrass workout volume used to be standard
only. Sadly it now includes TAB too. It has a bunch of the standard
fiddle tunes and matching CD's. That's how I first learned how to
read.

Another method...get a software program like Finale and learn to put
down some of you favorite licks onto "paper"

It's MUCH easier then it seems especially on mandolin where much of
what we do is in the first position.
