One way to help get a handle on reading standard would be to get a standard notation only books with melodies you know in your head and then use these books to learn them on the mandolin. Examples of good tunes books would be Christmas/Holiday, Beatles tunes, children's nursery tunes etc.
Steve Kaufman four hour bluegrass workout volume used to be standard only. Sadly it now includes TAB too. It has a bunch of the standard fiddle tunes and matching CD's. That's how I first learned how to read.
