I know what you mean, Nelson. At first I could have just rolled on the floor, but now I record myself every afternoon, both with a Kodak HD camera and usually either the iPad or a Zoom H2 set up as a USB mic on my laptop. It gives me both a video and audio record. I learned a LOT about the way I was playing by watching and listening to myself...mostly just that I was playing too forcefully and was killing my own technique. I probably still play too forcefully but I have been able to zero in on taking it easy...and have found that my playing is much better, at least to my ear...

I'm working on a few Monroe standards, recording myself and cringing during playback. Been learnin' tunes and hanging around the house, mostly. Been too damn hot to do much. I also picked up an iPad this week and have been playing around with that thing almost non-stop. Wanted to make it to Monroe Camp this year but have been on-call every weekend for two months and don't see it stopping. I like the money, but sheesh.... I am heading to Laurel Bloomery, TN for the OT picking there this weekend. A couple of nights in a tent, likely a bottle of Johnny Walker. All is well. This will be the first festival my wife has attended with me as a picker, so looking forward to that as well. I have been experimenting with stainless steel strings. Got some D'Addario and absolutely loved them. Sounded great from the get-go and only took them off when the threat of tetanus was looming. Tried to order some from Elderly but they hosed up the order. They made it right but wound up sending Bush Monels as a replacement. They're pretty jangly when new and it takes some time to wear them in, but they sound great when they hit their stride. I have four sets, so I guess that's plenty of time to get used to them. ________________________________ From: Jonathan Trawick <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, August 24, 2010 9:00:15 AM Subject: Re: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!!!!!! heard you had a sweet session with an arkansawyer recently. what was y'all workin on?
