i always ask first, even with my best picking friends, even with my students. 
And i would expect someone to 
ask me before picking up my mandolin, if they want to live, chances are I'm 
going to say yes, i love to hear someone 
better than me play my box, but I still want them to ask first. But don't even 
think of asking to touch one my chisels or 
finger planes.
