I use google app for my business and and to answer the question yes as a storage area google docs supports all doc types, the apps (word processor spreadsheets etc) support misrosoft word excel etc and googles own format.
The issue with google apps is that you don't get much storage space fro fee and not that much more if you pay. These day things are moving to cloud based solutions. Iwould be thinking about something like word press in combination with a storage service such as Amazons s3 or microsofts azure. I would steer away form a straight out forum system in favour of something like word press as you my want to do soothing more with the group than just forums. S3 and azure are pay for resources used. In other words if you use a megabyte you pay for a Meg. This is difference from other types of services where you pay for a package whether used or unused.
