These all sound very exciting! Let's hope we get lots of clever students applying to GSOC! The deal is this: Google will *pay* you as a student to work for an *open source project* this summer, and this is your chance to get involved as an open source developer for Taverna and Globus. OMII-UK (who's funding Taverna development) has also been listed as a participating organisation. The official announcement is not yet out from OMII-UK, but here's some nice project suggestions involving Taverna: http://www.omii.ac.uk/wiki/GoogleSummerOfCode#section-GoogleSummerOfCode-2009ProjectIdeas * Command line tool use in Taverna http://www.omii.ac.uk/wiki/Command%20line%20tool%20use%20in%20Taverna * Novel GUI for Taverna workflow creation http://www.omii.ac.uk/wiki/Novel%20GUI%20for%20Taverna%20workflow%20creation * JDK 6 scripting plugin for Taverna http://www.omii.ac.uk/wiki/JDK%206%20scripting%20plugin%20for%20Taverna * Biocep R/Taverna/myExperiment integration http://www.omii.ac.uk/wiki/Biocep%20RTavernaMyExperiment%20integration We're also very interested to hear your suggestions for projects - but do note that the deadline is quite close - 3rd of April 2009! You can start applying to be one of the GSOC students *tonight*, 2009-03-23 19:00 UTC - note that your application must be in by 2009-04-03 - Friday 3rd of April in less than two weeks. Apply here: http://socghop.appspot.com/ We're very happy to answer any questions about the potential projects already listed or that you have thought of. In fact - even if you don't want to be a GSOC student - but have a good idea - do let us know and we can add the idea to the wiki pages. We're hoping to keep students involved "the open source way" - that is communicating openly on this list, in addition to on alternative channels like on our IRC channel (#taverna on irc.freenode.net) - http://www.mygrid.org.uk/dev/wiki/display/developer/IRC+chat So feel free to submit any GSOC questions to this mailing list (taverna-hackers - see http://www.mygrid.org.uk/tools/taverna/taverna-mailing-lists/ for how to subscribe). -- Stian Soiland-Reyes, myGrid team School of Computer Science The University of Manchester ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apps built with the Adobe(R) Flex(R) framework and Flex Builder(TM) are powering Web 2.0 with engaging, cross-platform capabilities.
