I'm developing a server version of Taverna right now. There are a few
issues, but I'm planning to have a beta (with somewhat restricted
functionality) within a month. It's being developed as a Tomcat
webservice, but it should work with other Java servlet containers
provided they run Java 6 and can host Apache CXF (which has quite a
large set of dependencies).

However, there is a confusion with my partners related to taverna
server so I would like a clarification on the following:

Could taverna server be used to run a workflow remotely without using a GUI?

Yes. The command line tool in Taverna 2.2 (currently in production
bake-off) can be used to do that too; the server currently uses the
command line tool. However, the server is designed to expose the key
functionality for managing workflow runs for you, including a whole
bunch of things that only matter in servers. It's *almost* in a state
where I could let you have an intermediate build, but there's a lot of
churn right now in the service API - the stable build has some bugs in
it and so will definitely change within the next few hours - so I'll ask
for patience even if you want to participate in the alpha programme. :-)

Could I use the taverna server by using a client (such as a
php-client) to run a workflow remotely like a common RESTful web
service?

Yes, exactly that. A SOAP interface will also be supported if you
prefer; some languages find that easier to tool.

If this capability is provided, could you suggest any source for
further documentation?

There is no documentation yet. The code isn't finished, and right now
the only installations are demonstration ones I've supervised directly.
As noted, the plan is to get something properly available by the end of
July; the main thing remaining right now is security integration.

Donal.
