No, sorry that didn't work. I did not have a conf directory in
./myfancytool-taverna/example-activity-ui. Is that a problem? So I manually
created a conf directory copied log4j.properties there.
I can't get anything to show up in any logs. I used things like logger("...")
and System.out.println("..."). If I keep getting that "Unable to determine
file for log4j.properties", then that means things won't show up in the logs,
right?

Taverna will try to find log4j.properties from the subfolder conf/
from your working directory. Try copying out log4j.properties to
./myfancytool-taverna/example-activity-ui/conf/ - does that work..?
