Hello Steve and everyone else...

Oh I agree, the registry is by no means "secure" to anyone on this
list who could come up with a dozen creative ways to edit it. But
remember that a majority of computer users today have absolutely no
clue what they're doing. Depending on the scenario, even weak security
can be sufficient.

SL> Look, ma, regedit.exe on a floppy!

I was in high school only a few years ago.... The campus admin had the
computers pretty well locked down, but believe me, there were plenty
of ways to get around it. The most creative method I saw was to embed
an exe in MS Works as an OLE object and run it from there. Very, very
slow thing to do on an early 386, though. :-) A common act of mischeif
was to reboot the machine and press F5 when MSDOS starts, which skips
all startup procedures and dumps you into a DOS prompt. When a staff
person noticed the machine in an unfamiliar state, she would tape a
"out of order" sign on the monitor and call the admin. :-D

Ahh...Memories. Heh heh.

Anyway, my original point is that IMHO Windows' security is sufficient
for most mainstream uses. If you need better security, use a different
OS.
