 Select: View -> Message list tabs (tough my guess is that you've done that 
already)
 Type some text in the quick search bar and press enter
 A new message tab will appear with text string you've typed
 The status bar will show your filter icon

 As some folders show it and some don't, my guess is that you've
 created a folder view mode with a quick search filter and defined
 that as default for some folders
