Human-Computer Interface or Human-Computer Interaction. Depends on
which book you read. ;-) It has become almost a science, and in these
labs they go ahead with user interviews, keystroke analyses (this
includes the number and situation of "undo" or "esc" and the like, to
find usability problems), ergonometry of shortcuts, number of clicks
for mouse actions, and so forth. How often does the user need to open
the help file, and how long does it take him to find what he is
looking for? How comptabile is the interface with real standards and
with de-facto standards - the latter meaning that, for example, if
crtl-N means new message in most email clients, does the one under
scrutiny use the same shortcut? (Just an example. I have not gone into
de-facto standards with email clients.)

They videotape users' sessions with the computer, especially when the
user has never seen the application before, and record and analyze
everything - including the times that the user swears because he
cannot get the thing done he wants to do.

Hope so. Stefan murmured something about an interfacelift. :-)
