I'm using it, I just tested it with EICAR.COM, will try a couple of
other variants e.g. eicar.com.zip and the like.  But Avast! Popped up
a dialog in the Edit Mail Message window right after I hit the send
button saying the attachment was infected.

Did you set the default behaviour of Anti-Virus plugin activity in the
Preferences->Protection->Anti-Virus->Defaults to "check outgoing mail
for viruses"  By default TB has that option disabled.
