Would you tell us more about that account. Was this account freshly
created as such or was it one converted from POP to IMAP?

Have you used another client with that IMAP account. A nice free one
to try would be ThunderBird. For straightforward IMAP support without
the non-IMAP specific frills and features, it works well.

I am currently managing all my mail via an IMAP account. I've been
doing so for over a month now. TB! has been gradually improving since
I started using it. At no time did I have the non-start experience
that you've been having. TB!'s problems go beyond just the simple
basics of displaying mailboxes and synchronising so that you can read
your mail.

Either there's some incompatibility issue or the IMAP account hasn't
been setup right.
