I participate in other beta lists and each time I look at the list of messages, I scroll through most of the subjects and visit a couple threads only, i.e., those that interest me. I have never really felt like complaining. Afterall, it's not my list and is not there for posts, subjects and interests that will always eclipse my personal interests/needs. I don't really see a need for another list. When the smiley feature is fixed and working well, the long threads will stop? It's all part and parcel of betas. A popular new feature comes along and long threads concerning it appear. Those uninterested simply ignore. IMAP certainly doesn't need another list. Using an effective subject system would go a long way. For example, I always start the subject of all my IMAP queries with "IMAP:". In this way, anyone not interested in IMAP will see and skip my message and the messages threaded with it. I think what we may have to do is start moderating subjects. It's all about using informative subjects ... unambiguous subjects. For example, the subject for this thread is inadequate. A better one would be: "To moderators: why not create a separate Smileys DL?" Additionally, I strongly dislike the belittling of other people's interests by anyone, and this is, in the main, all this thread is really about when one really looks at it. If long threads were coming up regarding IMAP I doubt that it would have prompted this threads beginning. I recall the long threads that message list view modes generated in its beta phase. No complaints occurred or proposals that a new list dedicated to view modes development be started. The threads have also stopped since it's now working without much problems. Finally, if there's a problem with bandwidth and downloading e-mail traffic there's the GMane newsfeed which was specifically introduced for those who prefer to conserve bandwidth while participating in these busy lists with the inevitability that many of the messages will not interest them. -- -=[ :Allie: ]=- List Moderator and fellow end-user PGPKeys: http://key.ac-martin.com
