I agree with your opinion with the possible exception of a complete new
subject for a new thread because when someone sees quotes in a new
thread they wonder where they came from. So if I'm understanding you
correctly, I would use the (was: old subject) syntax after new subject.
At least that way someone could find the conversation where the subject
was born, sort to speak. The down side is that moderators would have to
try to administer which could be difficult.
