At work the mail gateway receives between 13-15.000 virus messages
every day. Because the software doesn't have an easy way of counting
how many copies of each virus were received and because we are
required to be able to tell the security department, I've set it up to
e-mail a notify to a 'valert'-address for each virus it catches and
blocks the mail it came in.
Each message contains the same general text with the name of the virus
in it somewhere and I'm using filter (lots of them) to store each mail
in a folder specific for a certain virus-name.
This has always worked beautifully, but now I'm getting in trouble.
In order to better cope with the problem I described in
<msgid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> of no longer being
able to drag-copy a filter and without having a 'paste here' option, I
decided to finally re-organize the filters in this account by using
subfilters. That way I could collapse the groups that are of no
interest to a newly created filter, and furthermore, I've noticed that
with subfilters, pasting when having the right thing selected will
give me the new filter at the bottom of the first higher level instead
of all the way at the bottom of the list, which also somewhat
alleviates the pain of not being able to drag-copy a filter.
I now have filters like this (only 3 of more than 100):
eSafe
|- Worm
|- Zafi.b
The eSafe filter is set to catch all mails coming from any of the
esafe scanners and has an action to put these in a folder @Unhandled
off the eSafe main folder (there's folder for it as well).
The Worm filter is set to match all messages and flagged "continue
processing" because it's just a container to hold all filters relating
to worm-viri. This filter has no action.
The Zafi.b filter matches on 'win32.zafi.b' in the message text and
has an action instructing TB! to move the message to the folder
\\account\eSafe\Worm\Zafi.b
The erratic behaviour I'm experiencing is that some, but not all
messages that should be matched by the Zafi.b filter (and a couple of
other filters with a similar configuration), get left in either the
Inbox or the @Unhandled folder.
Refiltering @Unhandled causes them to go to the correct folder.
Refiltering Inbox again causes erratic behaviour putting some of the
messages in @Unhandled and some directly in the correct folder.
Is there a but here or have I constructed my filters wrongly?
