It shouldn't, unless one is connected to the server using a 100 or
1000 MBit/s connection (which can, of course, exceed the bandwith the
server is able to handle from hard disk).

ACK. It shouldn't. Lets assume you're using a 5 MBit/s connection to
the server, which is quite much, unless you're directly nearby the
data center and have a dedicated 100 MBit/s uplink to the data center.

Assuming there is *zero* overhead for the connection the hard disk
would have to hand out only *5 MBit/s* when you synchronize your IMAP
account. No matter how many connections you open to the server, they
sum up to a maximum of *these 5 MBit/s*, they can't exceed this limit.

5 MBit/s equals to 610 kByte/s, current IDE-HDDs can handle up to 50
MByte/s (51200 kByte/s which is nearly 84 times faster than necessary
for this connection)!
SCSI-HDDs, especially when assembled into to a RAID (which is
appropriate IMNSHO for a server which is doing e-mail, web and
database) can handle even more, the limit is set by PCI bus:
33MHz*32Bit = 1056000000 Bit/s = 1000 MByte/s minus overhead for
protocols; lets assume a worst cast rate of 200 MByte/s.

So I still don't see the necessity for a server going to it's knees
when a single IMAP-connection asks for it's mails. Unless, of course,
Sean has set up some "magic stuff" that makes the server search
through all the 600 MByte of mails, which would cause the server to go
through all of them and put some significant load on the server. But
full synchronization only doesn't do this kind of setup, at least not
I could observe it over here.
