5.19.2006 A web mail account I have offers protected login and mail transport via the bat (et.al) however the bat will not give me the 'option' to accept their expired certificate so the process does not get past the server handshake:

I would like to see an option available to accept or reject an authentication certificate when one is encountered. Personally I rather dread the day when the Internet is completely controlled by certificates for 'our' safety.
