You can think of AB groups as being "virtual folders", only for the
address book. The AB entries are part of the general address book (and a
single entry in the AB), and (maybe) part of one or more AB group(s),
too (an AB entry can show up in multiple AB groups).
When this option ("hide items if not...") is checked, TB does not show
entries that belong to an AB group in the general address book (e.g. the
default "Personal Address Book"), but only when you explicitly select
the AB group. When the option is NOT checked, TB will show the entries
in the general address book, even if they are (also) part of an AB
group.
FWIW I have unchecked the option for all of my AB groups (it helps me to
avoid duplicate entries in the AB with the usual confusion of
multiple/wrong templates). That way, when I want a complete overview of
all the addresses in my address books, I click on the general address
book ("Personal Address Book" here).
