That's a typical hardware problem - Windows is waiting for the drive
to respond, and while it's doing that, the program that sent the
request is locked up, and there isn't anything you can do to unlock
it (you can't kill it either, since to kill a program, it's resources
must be released first, and that's not possible while waiting for
hardware to respond).

It would help a lot if you copied the exact error message. Anyway,
it's possible that the error is only on one part of the disk, and
TB's backup happened to reside there. If I were you, I'd download the
manufacturer's disk test program and let it do a full (extended) test
of the drive.
