There's always the possibility of using the latest public release, that's rather stable. Beta testing (and even more so for alpha testing) incudes the risk that you encounter something that's broken and some broken things include risk of data loss. You shouldn't use an alpha or beta version of your mail client, when you're not absolutely sure that you can recover any mail that might get lost. The case of the current full rewrite of the editor only empasizes that.
