Hello Tbbeta, I'm told that the red checkmark in this icon is an old MS style from the early days.
The logic of it is nice: the ABC meaning Spell, and the checkmark meaning Check. But what is needed now is a button that only shows the checkmark when speller is ON. Should a wish be developed on this? Also, what would be helpful is when the spell check is on or off to have that information appear in the Tool-tips with mouse hover.
