In view modes you can select Memo as one of the columns to be displayed in the message list and just make it, like I do, wide enough to show the first couple of characters of the memo. Since I am the only one writing memos in my TB, I make sure to not start them with blanks (actually I always use two stars ** to start them) so I will easily see if a memo is blank or not.
