I used the synchronise function to copy messages between my PC and
Laptop for a long time before moving to IMAP accounts.

The synchronise function is fairly limited and it not a two way
process. Basically it copies messages from the Source PC to the
Destination PC if they don't already exist on the Destination PC. If
you have deleted a file from the Destination PC then it will be copied
again from the Source PC - the same happens with most synchronisation
software (Laplink, for example).

The synchronisation process does not delete or overwrite files, so if
you have changed an email on either machine then you will end up with
a duplicate.

Personally, IMAP was the way to go, but if you can live with the
limitations (and regular duplicates removal) then the Synchronise
function is adequate.
