Actually, it's in a small law office.  I'll get around to networking at
home some time this year (I hope!).

When I originally installed TB, "Workstation with TCP/IP" just seemed to
be the right choice (as I understood the help at the time).  Now, I
wonder if I should have chosen the without TCP/IP mode.  Since it has
run fine up til now, I won't take the chance of changing modes.  AFAIK,
we haven't had the problems you mentioned.

We do have the mail stored centrally on the server.  One of the original
reasons for choosing TB was that it made it easy for people in the
office to access each other's email when necessary (and to back up
particular folders).

There is a quirk to our setup.  Each workstation launches TB from the
server (e.g., x:\apps\thebat\thebat.exe).  So, whenever we upgrade
versions, we have to make sure that TB is shut down on each workstation
before the upgrade starts.  We also have to do the same thing whenever
we want to make a change to an account's properties.
