Actually, they don't. See below....

Good point 8-). What I was actually trying to say was this:

1. First of all, I was assuming that the red-arrow icons work the same
as the blue-arrow icons, except that the current message is deleted
for the red ones. I haven't confirmed this. The blue ones (comparable
to Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down) were the ones I was testing.

2. I understood you to be saying that "previous" moves down to the
next message and "next" moves up, rather than "previous" moving up and
"next" moving down, as expected.

3. What I observed was that the blue-arrow icons were NOT moving to
the next message, either up OR down.

(Damn auto-format got me again! Sorry.) Yes, I understood what you
were saying, but the versions that do NOT delete are not working that
way for me. Here's a specific example. Anyone who still has these
messages can test their results; you might not, if you're deleting....

I have my list sorted by Creation Time in Descending order. I have
three messages displaying in my list, as follows:
1. A message from Juan with subject "About idiot-proof software".
2. A message from Wolfgang with subject "Re: Site with links".
3. A message from Oliver with subject "Re[2]: Some questions about 1.36".

Now...I double click on the message from Wolfgang (to help you find
the right one, it is dated Oct. 13 at 12:48 and has Message-Id
[EMAIL PROTECTED]).

I would expect that if things are working intuitively, the
left-pointing icon would move me up to Juan's message, and the
right-pointing icon would move me down to Oliver's.

If they are working opposite, as you say, I would expect the
left-arrow to move down to Oliver's message and the right-arrow to
move up to Juan's.

In fact, this does NOT happen. If I click on the left-pointing arrow,
it moves me to a PGP-subject message by Oliver, two messages down in
the list. If I click on the right-pointing arrow, it moves me to
another PGP message by Peter, three messages up in the list.

In other words, not only do the arrows move me in an unexpected
direction, but they don't move me to an adjacent message!

So I decided to test the Ctrl-Arrow keys. Interestingly enough, I
found them to work exactly the same way. In the view window, either
the arrow icons OR the Ctrl-Arrow keys do NOT move me to an adjacent
message.

Interesting, though: If I run the same tests while viewing your
message, I AM actually moved to the adjacent message, but in a
counterintuitive direction, as you described. But this holds true for
Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down as well as the icons.

So...the direction of movement is always counter-intuitive, and
furthermore, sometimes I am moved to an adjacent message, sometimes
not.

I hope this makes sense. This is all hard to put into words.

As I explained above, even Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down don't seem to move in
the expected direction. I just confirmed that "Follow Previous",
Ctrl+Up, and left-arrow icon all behave identically for me; so do
"Follow Next", Ctrl+Down, and right-arrow icon. In other words, the
menu descriptions are not accurate.

So let me get this straight. You're saying you're male, right?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but one of my female coworkers calls herself Ali
(short for Alison)! Anyway, what does it matter? Allie or Ali, male or
female, you make important contributions to the list.

Now...my linguistic curiosity comes through. What is the source of
your name? (Feel free to reply privately if you think we're getting
off topic.)
