No. There are a lot of email applications which do not use References and
In-Reply-To. Most notably the web based email readers and a good portion of
the Windows clients. References is pretty much a requirement in usenet
otherwise you get flamed off the face of the map. Even Deja.com keeps
References intact.

I score my news. I don't score my email.

Then you've not effectively read news. I go through my dozen or so
newsgroups in about <10 minutes excluding reading and replying time. What I
mean is simply scanning my newsgroups for interesting posts, posts to me, etc.
I read some heavy traffic groups (comp.os.linux.misc, comp.lang.perl.misc(?),
alt.gothic) that push 1000+ messages a day. I can say with near absolute
assurance I have never missed a message to me and that the topics that have
interested me in the groups that interest me by people who interest me I've
never missed.

No. Here is my formal wishlist for v2.0.

Do *NOT* include newsgroup functionality. You will simply get it wrong.
If people want newsgroups they can use Free Agent and XNews for free or Agent
and Gravity if they feel compelled to pay for news reading capabilities.
These for applications will surely be leaps and bounds beyond anything you'll
ever put into an email client and any effort to surpass them would only
detract from the main focus of the email client which is >>>EMAIL<<<.
