Please, export the following parts of your registry and send the
contents here so we can diagnose the problem (run regedit.exe, find
the key you want to export, then use Registry|Export menu item):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc
You'll get a file like this:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc]
@="Word.Document.8"
"Content Type"="application/msword"
--------------------
Now, export the following parts, too (substitute the strings you get
in above file for the strings "Word.Document.8" and
"application/msword" in the example below):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/msword
