I wanted to take these two sentences, isolate them, and then have people
read them together as this is the main thrust of my argument.

It is because they are all shipping basic editors people are constantly
asking for more features in each of the basic editors. My point is that you
can have one editor perform several different tasks. By focusing on that one
editor you can have a robust editor in each application.

Further, that is why I constantly point out that an editor thrown into an
application to be "good enough" will never compare to an editor which is
programmed independently. You further wrote the following...

Yes, it took some getting used to. Because it is not the basic editor.
It is a little higher up on the complex scale. I had to learn about ALT-L to
reflow quotes. Even then it doesn't do it in a manner that I like. Right
there I've had to learn a new editor even though the basic CUA keys are the
same.

Now I go to XNews. How does its editor reflow quotes? I don't know off
hand, I've not written any messages in it. I'm pretty sure though it isn't
ALT-L.

Joe uses ^K^J (IIRC). Vim is [count]Q{range}, or v(isual)Q.

See, basic editors, all doing the same thing in slightly different ways.
You have to learn the different capabilities, quirks and keys of each to work
effectively. There is something similar in Unix. Look at vi, nvi, vim,
elvis. All are "vi" editors. Noone would claim they are the same.
