Probably, somewhere. I'm planning on adding The Bat! to my own
mailer comparisons, after I get to know it better. (Available on my
Web site below.)
The problem is, those charts and reviews, including mine, are not as
useful as they pretend to be. Especially with a program like The
Bat! with its unique features like the Mail Ticker(TM). How do you
show that on a chart, or how do you rate it in a review? It's only
useful if you like that particular approach to mail management. All
interface issues are relative; some would prefer more dialog boxes
and fewer macro arguments, whereas others like the templates +
macros approach. Same for the multiple-windows versus single
multi-pane window design. (I personally don't like the Eudora or
Pegasus style of interface, and can only tolerate The Bat!'s
multiple popup windows because of the mail ticker. I sure would like
to use my space bar, though, to run through all unread messages
across all folders and accounts without going through the ticker.
And how do you go to the ticker without using your mouse?)
Other things that typically don't show up in reviews and comparative
studies:
- Editor behavior. How do you quantify something like TB's handling
of quoted text and automatic reflowing?
- Mouse versus keyboard. Most reviewers in the mainstream press and
on shareware sites like Stroud's or Winfiles don't even care about
keyboard shortcuts, for example. They are perfectly willing to use
the mouse, not realizing the efficiency of working from the
keyboard.
- Folder-specific configuration. Again, reviewers typically blow
this one off as a non-essential frill, even though it sets the great
mailers apart from the rest. The Bat! even has address-specific
settings, but most reviewers don't notice this feature. [Stroud's
site still claims that The Bat! doesn't handle HTML mail (or
do they mean it doesn't create it? If so, that's a plus!).]
So even if you do find such a comparison, it's probably best not to
give it too much credence. It all depends on which features you
yourself value or need.
