Hello, Batmen and women,
For the first time today, I tried out The Bat! (Ver. 1.39) in a dialup
environment. Generally it works OK, automatically dialing up three
different providers on independent schedules and shutting down after
completing the downloads. But I also noticed a couple of problems, one
serious.
(1) Regardless of whether it is set to show or hide the dialup
monitor, a dialup operation interferes with whatever else you are
doing, which normally in my case means typing in MS Word. The typing
is stopped dead in its tracks for a couple of seconds. This does not
happen with other mail clients I use (Datula and EdMax being the main
ones).
(2) More seriously, under certain circumstances it fails to close the
port when shutting down, making further dialups impossible. I'm not
clear yet on what those circumstances are, but it may be when one
dialup schedule impinges on another. I only noticed this after
setting the dialup monitor to Always hide.
As a result, I'm back to Datula at this location. :-( (But at least
that gives me real Japanese support and automatic news group checking
to boot.)
